Is Blood Type Really Linked to COVID 19 Risk? |
Posted: April 7, 2020 |
The coronavirus infectious disease or Covid 19 is now announced as an active pandemic everywhere. The infection is severe and life-threatening, so everyone must stay aware and alert about it. Now, regarding the blood types, there’s been an interesting new study published by the researchers based on the data collected from 3 hospitals in Wuhan (the epicenter of the pandemic) and Shenzhen, China. Read on. A total number of 2173 of patients (confirmed Covid-19 cases based on the SARS-CoV-2 test) were compared to that of the corresponding normal population. The study showed that people with blood group ‘A’ were more susceptible to the Covid-19 infection than those of the non-A blood groups. While the people with ‘O’ blood group were less susceptible to the infection compared to the non-O blood groups. Important to remember, that it’s the first of its kind study and a preliminary one. So, there are limitations. Although it’s an important aspect, still it’s unsure whether this will have any impact on the testing and treating of COVID-19 cases. It also doesn’t mean that the non-A blood groups are less likely to get the coronavirus infections, so there’s no need to be anything complacent about it at this early stage. Further larger researches needed. For any queries regarding this, you can reach online specialist or use Ask A Doctor. Moreover, the basic preventive rules applied to everyone, i.e., Physical distancing, thoroughly handwashing before and after touching any objects, wearing proper facemasks while taking care of any suspected/infected cases, cover all sneezes/coughs with disposable tissues and immediately discarding them into the trash properly. Avoid any public gathering, no public gathering at all (not more than 2 persons that too with a distancing of about 3 feet)) and, encourage and inform others about the same as well. With time, as bigger groups of data and researches will go on, we may have more solid details regarding the blood types and their susceptibility towards this Covid-19. At HealthCareMagic, we’ve dedicated 24x7 service of Infectious Disease specialists, Haematologists as well as Pulmonologists. Medical emergency of any form is almost always a time-dependant matter, so in case of any further assistance feel free to contact Ask A Doctor anytime.
