If any location can be called as a musical land in real sense then according to me it’s New Orleans. Many renowned and influential music genres actually emerged from the streets, bars and shops of New Orleans. This city in Louisiana surely has a rich and fascinating musical history. The love for music, dance and art culture was seen right back from 19th century. It is not like any other typical American city, it’s totally different. Right from the spiritual music in the church to the blues and soothing jazz in the bar, there were music and musicians of all type. If the city is so popular today, it is predominantly because of the unbeatable music culture and its history. There are some music genres that rightly defines the music culture of New Orleans. Jazz: Historians usually say that New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz. Dated back, African American communities were dwelling in this location who were responsible for the emergence and development of Jazz music. The cornet player, Buddy Bolden was the first Jazz musician and was also known as the father of Jazz. You can know more about this renowned figure in an upcoming film, ‘Bolden Movie’. Louis Armstrong belonged to the second generation of Jazz who elevated this music style. He also was from New Orleans. The early influencers of Jazz music were mostly from this city. Blues: Music is often related to emotions and for every heartbreak and sad mood there is a dedicated genre of music called blues. This genre which has influenced many other music was also rooted somewhere close to New Orleans in Mississippi Delta. It was created by African American, around late 19th - 20th Century. Blues music is often related to the end of slavery and their newly accomplished freedom. This musical art form was made distinctive by its blue scales, particular chord progressions, bass lines, cathartic lyrics. Rhythm and Blues: Rhythm and Blues, popularly known as R&B is a musical style of 1940s, emerged during World War II. The African, American communities came up with this genre which included soulful lyrics, harmonious singing and rocking backbeat. It was a blend of jazz, blues and gospel. Urban African American were the biggest fans of R&B music. The common instruments used for playing this music were saxophone, drums, bass, piano and guitar. The song usually had lyrical themes due to which the listeners felt more connected. Bounce: The ferocious style of bounce music originated in New Orleans is a big hit. The heavy band beats, strong bass music, vibrant atmosphere describes the spirit of New Orleans city. The energetic hip-hop music style emerged in late 1980s and soon got national exposure. Zydeco: Rock, rhythm and blues were combined together and Zydeco music originated. The Louisiana native music genre can be heard live in New Orleans. The French and English lyrics with energetic beats gathered people to dance. The artists expressed the hardship of their everyday lives with Zydeco. Clifton Chenier was known as the king of Zydeco music as he was an eminent player and also the first Creole to be honoured with Grammy award. Some of the greatest music and musicians popped up from the streets of New Orleans. Music has the power to transform lives and it was evident from the performers of New Orleans.
