Moving to a new place can be a stressful experience, and your dogs can also suffer from stress caused by the change of surroundings. However, there are certain things which you can do to help your puppy go through the transitional period without any significant problems.
1. Minimize anxiety
Discomfort and fear can trigger aggressive reactions from your dog, and that is why it is imperative that you make your four-legged friend as relaxed as possible. In other words, you need to reduce anxiety levels by any means at your disposal, and your furry friend will certainly take you for it later.
2. Check the safety of the new home
Dogs are curious by nature, and they enjoying going on small adventures to explore and “see the world.” However, sometimes they can get in trouble, and that is why you need to check the safety standards of your new house. What this means is that you have to make sure that the backyard is properly fenced and that your pet cannot walk out on his own.
3. Socialize with neighborhood animals
New and unknown territory needs to be “conquered” piece by piece, and that is why it is best to start with baby steps when it comes to meeting other animals in the new neighborhood. Taking a walk around the block and meeting local cats and dogs one by one can be a great method for introducing your dog to his new circle.
4. Keep the old schedule
Maintaining the “old” routine is also an excellent tip for making your dog adjust gradually and painlessly to a new house. In other words, you should try and keep the same feeding schedule, same patterns of playtime, walking, and so on. Of course, some things will be hard to mimic, but you should try as much as possible to replicate the situation from the previous environment.
5. Keep the familiar scent
Similarly to the old schedule and habits, you could also help your dog with the acclimatization process by keeping the familiar scent. Therefore, you should not wash the blankets and other materials which the puppy uses, and they should stay in the same condition, even if you are not so happy with the unpleasant odor. As we already mentioned, your dog will thank you for the extra effort you invest.
6. Bring its favorite toys
Among many other things, dogs are also creatures of habits, and they are possessive and protective about their favorite toys, crates, water dishes, and similar objects. In order to have a painless transition into the new environment, you should bring your dog’s favorite items with you. Never go shopping for brand new products.
7. Be extra loving and caring
Providing your puppy with an additional dose of cuddling can severely reduce their stress levels, and that is why you should be extra loving during those first few weeks in the new house. Most importantly, be patient with you dog and allow them to explore the new territory.
