What Happened Last Year With Your Dekalb County Property Taxes? |
Posted: April 22, 2016 |
The DeKalb County Property Tax Assessor’s Office has been busy due to some dramatic spikes in DeKalb County Property Taxes. On average, property owners experienced a 17% increase in their DeKalb County Property Taxes. Over 16,000 property owners filed property tax appeals last year, which is up almost 50% compared to the prior year. The result of this huge increase was a long and frustrating property tax appeal process. Everyone living in DeKalb County wonders what’s in store for their taxes during the coming years. Back in March 2015, the state legislature passed a bill that would freeze DeKalb County’s residential property value through 2021. Two months later, Governor Nathan Deal signed the bill into law. While this is great news for DeKalb County Property owners, it doesn’t mean that DeKalb County Property Taxes won’t increase between now and 2021. First of all, the law froze the assessed values of residential property values. Commercial properties were not included in this bill. Second, the law does not freeze the property tax rate that is applied to the assessed property value, which is how your property tax bill is calculated. Your property tax rate is set by DeKalb County each year. Property tax rates are set by the DeKalb County School System, the DeKalb County Board of Assessors, and the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners. If they decide to raise your property tax rates next year, your taxes will increase. If you receive an unfavorable property tax bill, seek help from Commercial Property Tax Professionals (CPTP).
